SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

What did Link Building Pro 1 do?

Link Building Pro, the original, modified the text copied from your website. Simply put, it added a linked credit line to the end, and it inserted links to your other pages within the copied text, where applicable. If that's all you want, go here to download the old 4kb script.

What's New in Version 2?

I've merged this project with Search and Share. Now, in addition to the credit features, this script facilitates the sharing of your text with other web services. For example, try copying this next paragraph:

Link Building 2 is an amazing tool that helps your website visitors share your content, with proper attribution. It connects to email, social sharing sites, eCommerce sites, and is the SEO's best friend. Think of it as the sneeze in the viral marketing metaphor.

What else does it do

What else! What else!? That's not enough for you? Okay, fine.

To further improve usability, this script distinguishes between the intentions of copying long and short text. While long text should be interpreted as shareable, short text should be interpreted as queryable. For example, suppose you're reading an article and a word, phrase or name comes up that you're unfamiliar with. What do you do?

Well, if you highlight it and then copy, this script gives you some fantastic on-page options. Try it with any of the following:

  • Wikipedia: Machiavelli
  • Google: World Trade Center, NY
  • Facts (Wolfram): Hamburgers -- (sometimes wolfram is down)
  • Amazon: 1984 by George Orwell -- (opens a new window)
  • Ebay: XBOX 360 -- (opens a new window)

How do I Install it?

Upload the Link Building 2 files to your website, and reference them at the bottom of your <head></head> tags like you would any javascript files. For example, if you're using the minified bundle:

<!-- These are the files that make this script, jquery and all, work. -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/jquery.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/jquery.hoverintent.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/jquery.easing.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/lb-core.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/lb-skin.js"></script>
<link rel='stylesheet' href='lbp/link-building-pro.css' type='text/css' media='all' />

Or if you're using the unminified version:

<!-- These are the files that make this script, jquery and all, work. -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/jquery.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/jquery.hoverintent.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/jquery.easing.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/lb-core.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="lbp/lb-skin.js"></script>
<link rel='stylesheet' href='lbp/link-building-pro.css' type='text/css' media='all' />

Then, you'll need to put the search and share links at the bottom of your page. Feel free to add or remove links as you like.

How Can I customize Link Building 2?

Authors: Modifying any of a handful of variables can change the way your text gets linked or cited. Further, if you put your HTML hat on, you can add or remove icons from the option list revealed after copying.

Designers: You can feel free to edit the images and css of the links in "linkwrap". If you're jQuery savvy, lb-skin.js contains all of the aesthetics, as well as the searching / sharing components.

Coders: I've exposed everything, warts and all, so you should know what to do. If you're looking to improve the script, but need a pointer, please feel free to contact me. I would greatly appreciate code cleanups or feature enhancements, and will gladly credit accordingly.

Can I Branch this to non-jQuery?

You bet! lb-core.js was written completely library-independent, specifically so that you could make dojo, mojo, or hubba-jigga-whatever versions. You could also probably make an improved jQuery version. I encourage you to use lbCallback(); to run your function, and lbp = {} to leverage variables. lbp-core.js should be fairly well commented, so take a look at the top assignment of variables for more.

Compatability / Bugs / Pending

  • I need your help. Please post a message on Get Satisfaction if you find any bugs. This script is a beta release, and I'm going cross-eyed trying to find problems with it.
  • Link Building Pro 2 is believed to be compatible with Firefox (Mac & PC), Chrome, IE 7 / 8, and Safari. IE 6 correctly gains text attribution, but I have disabled the search / share aspects for the browser.

Who Built This?

Brett Barros, in collaboration with an anonymous web marketing agency. For now, we'll call them SEO X. A big thanks goes to Bobince of DoxDesk for support in overcoming some technical hurdles. Appreciation is also owed to Quirks Mode for their discussion of text ranges.

If you are interested in contracting Barros to build tools (such as this one), or provide innovative SEO solutions, you can contact him via his Boston SEO site.

These anchors should help demonstrate the auto-linking of paragraphs above. With Link Building Pro, any text copied from the page should inherit the links found throughout the entire page. So...

  • Go back to the top of Link Building Pro.
  • Return to download this script.
  • View the screenshot of Copy / Pasting.
  • If you copy this bullet point, it won't link "click here".
  • Because even though click here is linked on the page, it is in our list of keywords not to link, found in the javascript file.
  • Learn about the benefits it has to SEO or keyword insertion.
